A multi-million pound leisure centre had to close on Saturday due to flooding.

The £11m Westcroft Leisure centre, in Carshalton, opened a year ago but had to close its doors this weekend due to flooding which caused an electrical failure.

Service user Michelle Bates said: “This is disgraceful. It's a new building that has had a lot of money put into it. I feel sorry for the kids that had parties booked as these are booked months in advance.”

The company which runs the state-of-the-art centre, Everyone Active, posted on their Facebook wall on Saturday stating that overnight flooding had caused them to lose all their electricity, technicians were on site and they were planning to reopen as soon as they could.

A swimming gala had to be cancelled on Saturday and users were encouraged to use the services at Everyone Active’s other leisure centre.

The company updated customers on Sunday and said that both its swimming pools would be open from 12pm with temperatures slightly cooler than normal.

A spokesperson for the leisure centre said the floods hit after heavy rainfall caused a culvert, which runs past the building, to overflow into the room where the electrics and swimming pool pumps are housed.

The centre had to close while the room was pumped out and the electrics and pool pumps dried.

General manager, Rebecca Eyles, said: “It was such a shame that the bad weather affected Westcroft Leisure Centre over the weekend but I’m pleased how quickly people worked to recover the facilities for Sunday.

“I would like to thank our members for being patient and our colleagues at nearby centres for accommodating people on Saturday.  Facebook and Twitter proved invaluable in keeping our members and local community updated and I’m pleased to say everything is back up and running once again.”
