Sutton is the second safest London borough for bank courier fraud, as police reported people are becoming increasingly aware of sneaky tactics.

From April 2013 to May 2014 there were 34 reported offences, compared to 47 in Merton and 178 in Croydon.

Victims of the scam receive a call from someone pretending to be from the police or bank, who tells them their cards are at risk of fraudulent use.

The scammers then ask for their PIN number, before arranging for someone to collect their card.

Between April last year and May 2014 the Met received 2,556 reports of courier fraud across all 32 London boroughs.

The average age of victims is 54, with the average loss from offences coming in at £2,600.

Sutton police report people are increasingly aware of the scam and are putting the phone down on callers before reporting the incident to police.

The force has been working closely with Age UK and Neighbourhood Watch to warn people of the fraud.

Acting Chief Inspector Neil Tyre said: "We urge residents to remain vigilant and to never reveal their bank details to anyone."

The figures were released this morning to coincide with the Metropolitan Police Courier Fraud Awareness Day.
