A tribute concert and a school open evening are set to clash, sparking fears of a bottleneck, parking problems and traffic chaos.

St Raphael’s Hospice is holding an Elton John and Abba tribute show in Nonsuch Park, Cheam, on Thursday, July 10, with gates opening from 6pm.

On the same evening Nonsuch High School for Girls, in Ewell Road by the park, is opening its doors to prospective students between 4pm and 8.30pm.

Sutton Councillor Mary Burstow, who represents Cheam ward, fears that there will be a bottleneck at the park gates as thousands of people arrive by car for the events.

Coun Burstow said: "Some people coming to the concert expecting to park nice and easily are going to have problems."

She said the school is being asked to present its traffic management plan at a Nonsuch Park Joint Management Committee today.

Of the school open evening, she said: "They have forgotten to tell the neighbours.

"The neighbours in this case are Nonsuch Park and the joint management committee."

Headmaster Peter Gale said they had notified the statutory authority in plenty of time.

Mr Gale said: "The school open evening was agreed at a meeting with other Sutton schools summer 2013."

He added: "This information has been with the [London Borough of Sutton] for about one year and on the school website since September 2013.

"The school has considered how it can help to alleviate the problem and this has been conveyed to the relevant authority."

Sheelagh McCarthy, head of corporate, community and events fundraising at St Raphael's Hospice, said they were only informed of the school open evening on Thursday.

Ms McCarthy said marshals will be supervising a grass parking area for concertgoers only near two public car parks at the park entrance.

She said: "We are not really foreseeing it as an issue. We have put things in place."
