A veteran car run will travel through Sutton and Wandsworth for the first in over 60 years next month.

Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run is a 60-mile journey which started in 1896.

This year will be a unique occasion because the route has been altered due to ongoing road works in Brixton.

Over 400 pre-1905 vintage cars will pass through Sutton and Wandsworth on November 5.

"I have been telling everybody about it," said 85-year-old Wandsworth resident Johnny Haines.

The motor enthusiast has been taking part in the veteran car run for 40 years and is thrilled the show is finally coming to Wandsworth.

He said: "It is marvellous! People of Wandsworth won't ever see it again. It will be a real treat for the kids here and a chance for people to see all the old cars."

Johnny will be taking part again next month and is a regular visitor to the Nightingale Pub in Sutton.

"I have been going to the Nightingale Pub for 63 years and I sometimes park my vintage cars there," he said.

The road show will also be coming through Sutton via the A217.

Councillor Mary Burstow said: "I am really excited that for the first time in over 60 years, the Veteran Car run will be going up the A217 St Dunstans Hill/ Belmont Rise and onto Banstead.

"I want Cheam to be looking at its very best, as I expect lots of people will want to watch over 400 beautiful old cars go past. I have contacted Transport for London to make sure that the grass along the verges has been cut and the litter picked up.

"At the moment some of our verges have an excellent display of weeds."
