Daniel Ransom stands accused of murder Daniel Ransom

Daniel Ransom, 21, was sentenced to 16 years in prison, Ross Collender, 21, to 16 years and 18-year-old Jordan Dixon to 14 years at the Old Bailey this morning.

The trio were found guilty of murdering 30-year-old IT worker Ben on Tuesday.

Ben, from Sutton, was out with his girlfriend Allana Devine, from Morden, to celebrate her birthday on November 1 last year when he was attacked by the group.

CCTV footage shown to the jury during the Old Bailey trial showed him being kicked and punched.

Speaking after the sentences were passed down, Detective Inspector Bob Campany, who led the police investigation, said the result was a "lovely bit of law".

"The police have worked hard to educate the public about the principles of joint enterprises and the message seems to be getting through.

"It is a lovely bit of law."

Good.
From the BBC:
“The court heard that Collender had 10 previous convictions including offences of dishonesty, violence and possession of ammunition, and he had regularly breached community orders.
Dixon had 13 including violence and knife possession and had also breached community orders.”
I just wish the system could be changed so the jury knew this before the case started.
Sadly, the sentence can’t take away the terrible tragedy of a good life lost, nor the pain inflicted.

The sentences still do not adequately reflect the gravity of what this gutter-life done. I'd go as far as to say pathetic.
Look at their previous convictions. They should've been taken out of circulation along time ago.
Sterilise the parents too so they cannot breed anymore scum to polute society.
In the U.S, they have the right idea when it comes to putting heinous offenders behind bars. They KNOW they're getting a good 40 year stretch. Not in the U.K.
I hope they get the same treatment inside that they dished out to their victim.

So they will be out in 7 or 8 years less time on remand? The coalition has it wrong we should be sending more people to prison and for far longer

LiberalsOut,

They will serve the full sentences as stated. The tariff in a life sentence is the minimum amount of time that must be served. You don't get any deductions from that apart from time already served on remand.

After that, they will be released if it's considered safe to do so and they will still be on licence for life and can be recalled to prison at any time if they cause concern, even if they don't subsequently break the law.

All i can say is what scum bags they are.You only have to look at them and see what People they are! I think This sentence is not long enough! why should they be let out of prison to murder a young hard working Gentleman.

they should be given bread and water and thats it! no luxuries.

The sentences do seem low, for the crime that has been committed.

I know that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but they all do look a bit scummy and simple, if their parents have a conscience, they must be totally devastated that they produced such low-life.

If we are ever to lower crime in society we are going to have to start taking some quite strong and radical measures. Can you imagine these three scumbags having kids? They should each be sterilised before leaving prison, that would probably reduce the benefits bill and crime in the future.

46 years between them ?
What a joke.
46 years each would have been more appropriate, or life without parole.
Or better still, death by lethal injection.
