Sherlock Holmes comes to Fairfield Halls

He’s been called the world’s greatest detective and now a one-man show of Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Llewellyn is coming to Fairfield Halls, writes Leo Thomas.

Sherlock Holmes: The Death and Life is a sequel for Llewellyn after his last worldwide sell-out tour Sherlock Holmes: The Last Act.

In this adaptation, Sherlock Holmes comes up against arch villain Moriarty, who was created by Arthur Conan Doyle to dispose of Holmes.

Doyle has a passion for raising spirits from the dead and that, combined with his risky strategy, gets him more than he bargains for.

The production is a light-hearted fantasy illustrating the battle between an author’s intentions and the rebellious personalities of his literary creations.

Speaking to the Croydon Guardian, Robert Llewellyn, remembers his previous visits to Croydon.

"This is my third visit to Croydon with Sherlock Holmes. I can remember driving all the way up to Croydon from Wales to perform at the Fairfield Halls. It was quite new then," he says.

Llewellyn says how Croydon audiences have always been pleasant and that he is looking forward to an equally delightful crowd at Fairfield Halls.

He promises audiences a funny but sometimes spooky play which can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

He says: "It’s a very funny piece. There are smaller characters in it that are very comical. There are also a number of quite spooky scenes between Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes, which children always love."

Llewellyn adds: "Conan Doyle didn’t like Holmes. He was embarrassed by Holmes and killed him off with Moriarty.

"In this play we see a lot of Conan Doyle, Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes and about 10 other characters.

"Conan Doyle saw Holmes as a monster of his own creation and the idea Conan Doyle has of Sherlock Holmes in his head is quite funny because it’s rather extreme. It’s quite an uplifting couple of hours."
