Resistance 2 - Playstation 3

Picking up where it’s predecessor left off, Resistance 2 is the latest installment of the series featuring Nathan Hale and his battle against the Chimera.

After the events of the first game, Nathan is extracted and sedated by Black Ops soldiers and taken to the Special Research Projects Administration HQ in Iceland. On the way, their transport is attacked by the Chimera and only Hale and Major Richard Blake survive.

From here Blake and Hale find the Russian scientist Fyodor Malikov and safely take him to America. The game then moves forward 2 years, to when the Chimera launch a full-scale invasion of the United States. Nathan then travels all over the United States with The Sentinals (uber hard geezers with big guns), fighting the Chimera.

One thing that has got to be said about this game. It is epic, I mean huge! The environments in which this game take place, are ambitious and monumental.

Quite often you will find yourself, fighting alongside The Sentinals against the Chimera in the most remarkably designed and textured surroundings. At other times you will find yourself on your own fighting off hordes of the Chimera, in a really claustrophobic setting. It's a good contrast, that works almost seemlessly.

The AI in this game is terrific too, The Chimera give you a good run for your money and refreshingly, the Sentinals that assist your character, do actually offer some help. Unlike most NPCs, they don’t get in your way or cause your untimely end.

The graphics are about the best I’ve seen so far on the Playstation 3. With a good contrast of colours and an impeccable attention to detail, it’s a wonder how the frame rate doesn’t stutter. Sure, a few corners have been cut here and there (explosions do look slightly low res), but this doesn’t deter from what the developers have achieved here, especially when you consider how much is going on around you.

Resistance 2 has two types of online play. First there is the competitive multiplayer mode. This features 4 different matches available, including the bog standard Death Match, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and Skirmish. These matches, give gamers the option of playing as either a human or a Chimeran. Up to 60 players can play at once and it has got to be said, at times this feels like a little too much.

The other mode is co-op. Unlike its predeccessor the co-op mode is not a rehash of the single player campaign. This mode features a completely new campaign that runs along side the single player campaign. Playing as part of a special forces group called “Specter Team”, up to 8 players are supported. Players are tasked with various tasks, whilst fighting off hordes of the Chimera.

All in all, Resistence 2 is a very solid game, that features both an engaging single player campaign and good multiplayer value as well. If you like shooters and you own a Playstation 3, then you really should pick up a copy.

Verdict: 8.5 out of 10

The Good
- Great graphics
- Good plot
- Good online features

The Bad
- 60 people online can be a bit much
