Elmbridge Choir invited to sing in Cape Town
1:52pm Thursday 11th October 2012 in Freetime By Laura Proto
Cape Town bound: With a little help from their friends
Elmbridge Choir has received an exclusive invitation to perform with the internationally-acclaimed Cape Town Youth Choir.
Sponsorships pending, about 200 singers and musicians from Surrey Community Music Society hope to travel to Cape Town next April, for the performance at the South African premiere of Karl Jenkins’ new choral work, The Peacemakers.
The work features texts from some of the greatest peacemakers throughout history, and Bishop Desmond Tutu, former South African President FW de Klerk and the Dalai Lama are to be invited to attend the premiere.
The performance will take place in the Cape Town City Hall, home of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and where Nelson Mandela made his first public speech after his release from prison in 1990.
Cliff van Tonder, musical director of Elmbridge Choir, said: “To perform this stunning piece of music before some of the world’s most influential and inspirational leaders is truly awesome and we would like all of our members to share this unique experience.”
