History buffs will have the chance to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the historic Bouncing Bomb raids of May 1943 with two special events over the next two weekends.

Renowned engineer, designer and inventor Sir Barnes Wallis spent almost four decades working at Brooklands - most notably on the Wellington bomber and the bouncing bomb used to breach the Ruhr Dams in Germany that produced much of the power for war industry in the region in 1943.

These two events will mark the 70th anniversary of those daring and deadly raids.

This Sunday, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Avro Lancaster bomber will circle above the museum which offers some spectacular vantage points to witness this rare sight.

In addition to the flypast, Dambusters -related films will be shown and volunteers will be on hand to tell visitors about the Wallis exhibits.

The exhibition includes a prototype of the bomb and a model of the catapult used by Wallis to test the theory of its operation, with examples of the Tallboy and Grand Slam earthquake bombs, which were the largest conventional bombs used in World War II.

Vic Benson, the only known surviving member of the team Wallis led, will also attend the flypast.

A week later, the museum will host a day of celebrations including the chance to meet veterans of RAF Bomber Command. They will be available to sign memorabilia, prints and books on the day.

Visitors can go an afternoon bus trip to local places connected with Wallis. The tour takes in the mansion where Wallis invented the bomb, the testing ground and Wallis’s grave.

There will also be a talk about Wallis followed by a demonstration of the model catapult.

The Vyners Swing Band will play in the afternoon to add to the atmosphere.

Allan Winn, museum director, said: “The public will get a real insight into the contributions the people working at Brooklands made to these extraordinary events.

“The event will appeal anyone interested in this era, especially to those who may have had family members involved in the work or in the raids themselves.

“For kids studying this era at school, it’s wonderful opportunity.”
