Children will be able to try life as a Tudor by creating their own “tussie-mussie” at Elmbridge Museum.

In the Tudor era, people carried scented pomanders and herbal bouquets called tussie-mussies to hide bad smells and protect their sensitive noses.

They also believed the sweet scents would prevent diseases, particularly the plague.

The Museum Family Fun event will let children and their parents choose various plants to make their own Tudor speciality.

Councillor Jan Fuller, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: “Parents and children will have fun making their own posy of flowers and herbs to take home and in the process, will learn a bit more about the fascinating Tudor way of life.”

Tudors and Tussie-Mussies takes place at Elmbridge Museum on Saturday, June 8, from 2pm to 4.30pm and a charge of £1.50 per child applies.
