Sex, love and violence are coming to Sutton Library.

The town centre library having a visit from three leading authors who will explore what it was like to live in medieval Europe.

James Burge, Angus Donald and Michael Jecks are taking part in panel discussion from 7pm to 8pm on Wednesday 4 December.

Mr Burge is an award-winning director who writes about the middle ages and has penned acclaimed biographies of historical figures including Dante.

Mr Donald's five book series the Outlaw Chronicles is a dark reimagining of the Robin Hood legends and Mr Jecks is the author of the Templar series of historical crime novels.

The discussion will aim to bring to life the human drama of the middle ages. A council spokesman said: "Europe in medieval times saw the coming together of different people and religions, which led to intolerance and conflict - and there was the plague.

"But there was also an exchange of ideas across cultural boundaries, which meant much scientific knowledge was transferred to western Europe.

"Classical texts were translated and chess was introduced to increasing numbers of people.

"The same period also brought us printing and the foundations of the modern institutions we have today such as schools, universities and hospitals.

"Against this background, library staff are expecting a lively debate."
