‘If your town was a packet of crisps, what flavour would it be?’ sounds just the kind of thing Alan Partridge might say but it’s a question we found ourselves asking this week.

The London Crisp Co has launched a range which celebrates ‘London’s coolest locations’.

And so we have Greenwich Prawn Cocktail, Soho Sea Salt, Camden Sweet Chilli, Shoreditch Cheese and Onion and Southbank Salt and Vinegar.

But do the crisps really resonate with the locations they’re celebrating, and what would other areas taste like?

We sent Vibe’s Janith Aranze on to the streets of Sutton for a taste test with a difference to find out…

  • Does prawn cocktail represent Greenwich well? What would your town taste like? Tell us on Twitter @JimNewsShopper

Gerry Jerome tried Soho Sea Salt but couldn’t guess where the flavour was supposed to represent. He said: “It’s a bit tasteless. I suppose somewhere bland. I wouldn’t like to mention a few places…maybe Bexley or something like that.”

Fruit and veg trader Dennis Adams, 58, was astounded by the link to Greenwich and prawn cocktail. After tasting the snack, he said: “I ain’t got a clue. I wouldn’t even know.

“How do they think it comes from Greenwich? I don’t even understand that. It doesn’t make sense, does it? You could tell them anything you like.”

Your Local Guardian:

Tara Davis-West, 46, also struggled after getting a taste of Greenwich. “How do you choose an area from crisps?” she said, before gamely having a go. “Somewhere fishy. I don’t know. Greenwich, there you go!”

Restaurant worker Jessica, 19, perhaps eyed the packets too closely before wrongly punting on Soho instead of Greenwich for the prawn cocktail but getting oh-so-close (in name only) with a guess of Bank, rather than Southbank for the salt and vinegar crisps.

Margaret Glover, 66, got hipster Shoreditch and the home of Parliament in a muddle after tasting the cheese and onion crisp. She said: "It’s crispy. I can’t think of an area in London…Westminster?"

If Sutton had a flavour…

Dennis Adams: “Sutton? God knows, I haven’t got a clue. What do they reckon?”

Gerry Jerome: “It would be a family flavour, I would have thought. Something that kids will like. I don’t think it’s this.”

Tara Davis-West: “Something spicy. Something with mixed spices.”

Jessica: “I think it would be this one (ready salted).”
