Fresh from her run at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, comedian Susan Calman takes to the stage at the Landmark Arts Centre.

Calman, a petite Glaswegian who loves cats, will start her UK tour in Teddington with her performance of Lady Like.

The show gives comedy lovers a chance to spend an hour with the woman known to her neighbours as the mad cat lady.

If you have seen Calman before, Lady Like will be a reassuring couple of hours spent in her company. But if you do not know who she is and what to expect from her, this show is about being older, wiser and liking yourself whatever anyone might say.

Despite being known as the mad cat lady, the show is not all about cats and fluffy creatures; Calman promises to reassure you, make you feel better about your own life and let you find out what being ladylike really means.

Speaking to website Three Weeks ahead of her performance at the Edinburgh Festival, Calman explained how to the show makes the audience feel good.

She says: “It’s a three-stage approach. First, nice, air conditioned, accessible venue that doesn’t smell of death. I’ve performed in many rooms that have a distinct smell of despair. Not this year.

“Second, perform a good show where I clearly explain why I’m an idiot with lots of jokes, stories and the like.

“And third the audience leaves knowing that no matter how bad they think life is, I am clearly failing more spectacularly.”

With a show filled with anecdotes, observations and honesty, it is little wonder why The Times called the feisty scot “chirpy” and full of “optimistic level-headedness”.

Calman is particularly connected to the show as she wants to share her story about how she plunged to life’s lowest depths and came out the other side.

Above all, Calman says the show is a call to like ourselves no matter what others say and is a journey of self-awareness, self-discovery and self- indulgences.

Calman says: “All of us have mental health issues, it’s just that for some of us, our issues make us go more mental than others.”

Before turning to comedy, Calman studied law at Glasgow University and worked in the field for a number of years, including a stint working with death row inmates in America.

Since entering the world of comedy in 2005, Calman has appeared on QI, Would I Lie To You?, BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz and Channel 4’s Blowout.
