Voluntary Steward Gwen Saxby saw Welsh choir Cor Meibion Caernarfon while on holiday recently and came back to the Epsom Playhouse raving about them.

Her enthusiasm was so contagious that theatre manager Elaine Teague contacted the choir and persuaded them to leave the valleys to perform a one off concert at the theatre on Saturday 21 September.

Elaine said: "Gwen was bowled over by this choir and thought it was a great shame their choral music tradition couldn't be shared with Surrey audiences.

"She was so impressed with their performance I wanted to see what all the fuss was about and when I spoke to them they were more than happy to make the trip south to perform here.

"We are really delighted to be able to offer this wonderful choir to Epsom audiences."

Cor Meibion Caernarfon was founded in 1967 by a small group of workers at the Ferodo brake lining factory on the outskirts of Caernarfon.

The factory has long since vanished, but the choir sings on. Most of the members come from the historic town of Caernarfon - a World Heritage Site - and its surrounding villages.

Now one of the leading choirs of Wales they have performed in prestigious venues throughout the United Kingdom as well as in Europe and North America and boast an impressive list of successes in choral competitions, including nine victories at the National Eisteddfod of Wales.

The Choir sings pieces from a wide repertoire including Welsh hymns and traditional songs, opera and other classical music and contemporary pop and musicals.

The Choir will be accompanied on this tour by Dafydd Huw Jones, a professional harpist and harp teacher who lives near Llanrwst in the beautiful Conwy Valley in Snowdonia. He is one of Wales's best known harpists.
