While many of us dream of being on stage rocking out to crowds of thousands, the closest we tend to get is dancing around the house with a hairbrush for a microphone and tennis racket for a guitar.

But Ady Aslam has managed to transform that tennis racket into a bass and has even wound up playing the music of one of his favourite bands in U2 tribute show U2:UK.

The 34-year-old takes on the persona of bassist Adam Clayton but admits he thought his chance of making it famous had passed him by in the nineties.

“When you are kids you just want to be famous but then you get to a certain age when you realise it’s not going to happen,” he said.

“When we were 18 and in guitar bands there were a lot of boy bands coming through and there wasn’t much of a market for us so we missed the boat and thought we weren’t going to make it famous.

“The industry is all about what you look like now, you only have to look at the categories on X-Factor to see you are unlikely to make it after hitting 25.

“But now here we are - we get to play to big audiences playing the music we love doing.

U2:UK came into existence seven years ago when Ady and best friend Simon Pellecchia (The Edge) answered an advert for a U2 band, though Ady says he was a bit of late bloomer when it came to appreciating U2.

“I was a little later getting into them than the others,” he said.

“It was Achtung Baby that was introduced to me when it was released in 1991 and I immediately thought they were brilliant and got addicted to them straight away, buying their entire back catalogue.”

The concert will include a multi-media show mirroring those put on by the Irish band at some of their famous gigs, as well as songs like With or Without You, Beautiful Day, One and Sunday Bloody Sunday.

U2:UK, Fairfield Halls, December 5, 8pm, £18.50. Call 020 8688 9291 or visit fairfield.co.uk.
