DJ Khaled may now be loved around the world, thanks in no small part to his Snapchat presence, but his rise to the top definitely had its low moments.

Speaking with self-help writer and motivational speaker Tony Robbins – a job Khaled could almost definitely do – for Complex’s latest cover issue, Khaled recalled being homeless as he was becoming a “young man”.

“I worked so hard to come up, and it all got taken away. And when it all got taken away I was becoming a young man,” Khaled said. “So I had to sacrifice to leave my family. Sleeping in my car, getting an apartment for a month and getting evicted the next month. Staying in the $25, $50 hotels.”

But, even back then, the New Orleans native had within him the qualities we admire today.

“I stayed focused and I never surrendered, and now I’ve been blessed. Now I take care of my mother, my father, and my entire whole family.”

Khaled is preparing to drop his ninth studio album, Major Key, featuring some of the biggest names in hip hop, and has just got back from Beyonce’s Formation tour – not to mention his first child is on the way. Blessed really is the word.

We’ll leave you with some of Khaled’s wisdom.

“The more blessings you give the more blessings you get back”.
