Tonight we finally got to watch Educating Joey Essex: General Election, What Are You Saying?! (we didn’t just make that up, it was the actual title), where The Only Way Is Essex star and notorious idiot Joey Essex tried to get his head around politics.

In a desperate attempt to engage the 55% of 18- to 24-year-olds registered to vote in the UK, Joey took on the political world with zero knowledge (he seemed to think the government was “a person” and struggled to fully pronounce the words “general election”), in order to decide which party would win his precious vote.

For any viewers who sneered at the idea of airhead Joey presenting anything to do with politics, there were plenty of people on Twitter who admitted to being just as clueless about the political sphere.

So without further ado, here’s what happened when Joey met some of the party leaders.

Nick Clegg

Once Nick had explained that he’s leader of the Liberal Democrats, not Liberal DemoCATS, Joey asked why he should vote for his party. Nick swayed Joey a little by pointing out his party’s promises to improve mental health services. Joey was on board with this, as sadly his family have been deeply effected by mental health issues.

The pair seemed to get on reasonably well, but the audience had mixed feelings.

It’s safe to say everybody watching collectively cringed when Joey and Nick took a selfie together.

Ed Miliband

Next up was Labour leader Ed, who was “like Justin Bieber”, according to Essex. The pair chatted “jacking up” the minimum wage, scrapping zero hours contracts and the prospect of a coalition, which Ed said he wasn’t “keen” on. Milibae and Essex got on surprisingly well.

Nigel Farage

Farage and Essex bonded over a mutual love of snazzy jackets, but Essex said “I understand why Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg wouldn’t want to go for a drink with him”. Nonetheless, the pair bonded over fish and chips and chatted about grammar schools and (obviously) immigration.

David Cameron

The Prime Minister decided that meeting Joey wasn’t “reem”, so sadly the documentary was void of any Essex-Cameron bants.

While Cameron’s people probably thought it was a good PR move to snub the TOWIE star, it could have actually benefited him.

So, what was Essex’s conclusion after his long, hard political journey? Surprisingly, Joey’s conclusion was pretty heartfelt and actually quite insightful.

He said: “I’ve learnt that politics is in my head, it’s in the country, it’s in Grimsby. It affects poor people, it affects rich people, it affects Essex. Politics is everywhere, it’s in the air.

“My conclusion with the general election is just always vote. Be a voter. Stand up: vote.”

In a weird turn of events, Essex’s documentary seems to have actually engaged some people.
