Antonio Banderas has revealed how his facial hair for his latest role caused problems.

The Expendables 3 star had a fake beard glued onto his face to play evil pirate captain Burger-Beard in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge Out Of Water.

“At six o’clock in the morning, this kind of hairy tsunami came to me and it was like a bear attacked me – and it stays there for the rest of the day,” he joked.

“It was more dramatic. Believe me! I’ve done a lot of action movies, stunts and dangerous things – nothing like this. After three days with the glue and the amount of hair on my face, it became dramatic because my skin started getting irritated.

“And so I have to shave off the glue literally with a shaver or razor every day. It became worse as days were passing. As soon as they put the glue, which has a component of alcohol, it was like, ‘Oh my god’ and then more hair.”

Antonio continued: “During the day, whenever I laughed, the moustache got detached, so more glue [had to be added]. At the end of the day, it was a very [painful] experience but I tried to hide that when I was in front of the camera.

“Maybe when I watch it, I can see the pain in my face,” he added.

The 54-year-old actor, who has starred in Desperado, The Mask Of Zorro and is the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek films, joins Matt Berry, Alan Carr and Stacey Solomon, who all voice characters in the film.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge Out Of Water is in cinemas now.
