George Clooney has led tributes to legendary Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub, who has died at the age of 77.

The Ocean’s Eleven producer passed away after a cardiac arrest in Santa Barbara, California on Monday and many of those who worked with him and admired him have been quick to pass on their condolences.

Weintraub was one of the top concert promoters of the 1970s, working with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and shaping John Denver’s career, before moving into the film industry where his work spanned decades and included The Karate Kid films, Nashville, and Behind The Candelabra.

He died with new projects still in development, including the recently-launched HBO series The Brink and an upcoming remake of Tarzan.

Clooney, who starred in Ocean’s Eleven, said in a statement: “In the coming days there will be tributes… We’ll laugh at his great stories, and applaud his accomplishments.

“And in the years to come, the stories and accomplishments will get better with age, just as Jerry would have wanted it. But not today. Today our friend died.

“To his family and friends, Amal and I send our love. And to those who didn’t know him we send our deepest sympathy. You would have loved him.”

Another of the film’s stars, Brad Pitt, said: “He was an absolute original. I loved him and will genuinely miss him.”

Don Cheadle added: “Jerry was to me equal parts Godfather, rainmaker, caretaker, PT Barnum and friend. I am happier for having known him. He will be sorely missed.”

More stars tweeted their reactions to the news.

Former US president George Bush senior also expressed his sadness: “Jerry was an American original, who earned his success by the sheer force of his instinct, drive, and larger-than-life personality. He had a passion for life.

“And throughout the ups and downs of his prolific career it was clear just how much he loved show business.”
