Judge Rinder has insisted he doesn’t judge the people who appear on his show, just their cases.

The criminal barrister – who is publishing his own guide to the law Rinder’s Rules – is known for the hilarious put-downs and disparaging remarks he makes to people who do not keep order in court on his ITV show.

The British version of US show Judge Judy oversee disputes between people, sometimes between friends and families. But the legal eagle, whose real name is Robert Rinder, denied it was a more civilised version of The Jeremy Kyle Show.

He said: “We deal with real legal issues and we have a variety of people from all sorts of walks of life and background.

“I know there’s a lot of prejudice towards Jeremy Kyle, but I couldn’t comment because I don’t watch Jeremy Kyle.

“I wouldn’t like to make any judgment ever about any group of people, and call them uncivilised.

“I think we have an instinctive sense to look at people’s behaviour and say, ‘That’s uncivilised.’ But actually delve behind other people who perhaps aren’t from a class group that we may have a view about, and their behaviour may be equally uncivilised, all be it not on TV.”

Judge Rinder has published a guide to help readers understand their basic legal rights, on a range of matters from cancelling holidays to dealing with mobile phone contracts.

He said: “I don’t think people do know their legal rights and I think it’s a really big issue.

“Sadly lots of the acts which are designed to protect consumers have become increasingly complicated.

“I have been practising as a lawyer for 15 years and I read these terms and conditions and I think what?! They’re so opaque that they don’t mean anything.”

Rinder’s Rules is published by Century on October 8.
