Star Trek Beyond has landed at the top of the weekend box office in the US.
Paramount’s latest outing with the Starship Enterprise soared to $59.6 million (£45.3 million) in North American ticket sales, knocking Universal’s The Secret Life Of Pets from the number one spot.
Pets was second, adding an additional $29.3 million (£22.3 million) to its stellar $260 million (£197.8 million) earnings to date.
Star Trek Beyond – which features Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto – is the third film since JJ Abrams rebooted the franchise in 2009.
Warner Bros’ low-budget horror Lights Out tied with Ghostbusters for third place with $21.6 million (£16.4 million), while Fox’s animated Ice Age: Collision Course debuted with $21 million (£15.9 million).
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie opened outside the top 10 with $1.8 million (£1.3 million).
