Just a week on from the Xbox One’s launch, gamers are in for another exciting night when the PlayStation 4 hits shops this Friday.

PlayStation and retailer Game have announced a supply of consoles will be available to buy at a midnight launch event being held at the PS4 Lounge #4ThePlayers in London’s Covent Garden on Thursday into Friday morning.

Launch day pre-orders for the PS4 have been sold out since August, but there is still a chance you might be able to get your hands on one to enjoy over the weekend.

The PS4s available at the PS4 Lounge will be on a first-come-first-served basis from midnight.

Rival Microsoft had Plan B on hand for its Xbox One launch this week, so Sony has got Tinie Tempah in to perform at its event.

Queuing for the launch event will start from Thursday morning.

The PS4 Lounge is located at 17 Bedford Street, Covent Garden, and punters will be kept fed and watered by event partners Domino’s and Red Bull.

The PS4 launches across the UK on November 29, priced at £349, with more than 400 stores hosting midnight openings.

Gamers who for whatever reason haven’t placed a pre-order or can’t make it to the PlayStation event in London could still find it’s possible to buy a PS4 on launch day.

Some retailers might have stock – for example, supermarket giant Asda will be selling limited supplies to those without pre-orders at various stores including Gravesend and Swanley.

Talking about the Thursday’s launch event, Fergal Gara, MD and VP for Sony Computer Entertainment UK & Ireland, said: “Day one PS4 pre-orders sold out in record time and this could be the last chance for anyone who wants to get their hands on a console before Christmas.

“We really wanted to offer some way for people to buy on launch day, and this is a fantastic opportunity for anyone that hasn’t already pre-ordered to get their hands on a PS4 on day one.

“The excitement in the run-up to our UK launch has been phenomenal, and we want to thank gamers for their support by giving them the chance to take a PS4 home at the earliest opportunity.”

Martyn Gibbs, GAME chief exec, said: “The excitement and anticipation for the PS4 launch is absolutely massive.

“We’re stepping into the next generation of gaming and this really is a fundamental shift for the industry.

“The PS4 launch is going to surpass anything PlayStation has done before - our pre-order numbers are around four times higher than the PS3 and we’re seeing those numbers grow every day.”
