There is a special birthday party taking place this month as Spot the popular children’s book and TV character comes to Fairfield Halls, writes Andy Bloss.

For the first time in eight years the highly acclaimed children’s musical show Spot’s Birthday Party is back on stage with tour dates across the UK.

Spot is currently in its 32nd year and is one of the most loved children’s characters.

The production is a revival of David Wood’s adaptation of Eric Hill’s classic children’s story. Wood has adapted a series of plays including The Gingerbread Man, The BFG, The Tiger Who Came To Tea and The Meg and Mog show.

The show sees Spot celebrate his birthday with his friends Steve the monkey, Helen the hippo and Tom the crocodile.

There is plenty of music, songs, games and stories for the audience to join in with and children can dress up in their party gear and bring birthday cards for Spot.

Organisers say the production is the perfect introduction for young theatre goers to experience a live show for the first time.

Wood, who adapted and directs the play, says: "When I was first asked to do it, I looked at all the Spot books.

"They're very minimal, and are hardly stories at all. So it was a big challenge. But what was reassuring was the fact that the four main characters are really just children."

He adds: "The children really enjoy it and come dressed for a party.

"They are also encouraged to make their own birthday cards for Spot. When they arrive in the foyer, there is a large dog basket where they can put their cards.

"A lot of cards are then stuck on the side of the stage. Spot thanks everyone. All this helps to make the audience part of the entertainment."
