MP Since - 1997 Majority - 1,663 Born - 10/07/1958, Married. 3 daughters.
Education - Walworth Comprehensive School. Southwark Further Education College.
Previous Occupation - Taxi Driver, also set up 'Job Club' in his spare time (1980) to help young people get into work. TGWU member.

Personal Overview - An experienced Greenwich Councillor who seems locally aware, an example of which was his leading the establishment of the Greenwich Alarm scheme for senior citizens. In addition, he has been involved in the campaign to prevent alleged 'privatisation' of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich. In his Local Government role, he also had experience of attempting to gain private sector support (for area redevelopment purposes) for a 'Town Centre Manager' scheme. Achieving a measure of notoriety for his status as the first former black cabbie to become a MP, he is also known to have mused about attending a Betty Bootroyd Speaker's reception in his Millwall top (the invitation asked for smart clothing - the top had the wording 'Millwall on Tour - these colours don't run'). With a personable demeanour he holds out against the clean shaven Labour trend, though as something of a free spirit this resistance was not the crucial element in his former backbench status. Was promoted into the Opposition team at the October 2011 reshuffle.

Political History - Cllr Greenwich BC (1986-98). Chief Whip Labour Group, Greenwich Council (1990-91). MP Eltham (1997-). Member of the Procedure Select Committee (1997-2001), Transport Select Committee (2002-09). Member of the London Committee (2009-10). Member of the Communities & Local Government Select Committee (2010-11). Shadow Minister for Culture, Olympics, Media & Sport (2011-).

Characteristics - Seems locally motivated, with likely employment and health interests. Previously a member of the London Taxi Board. Long-term Millwall FC supporter.
