Residents can now pay their council tax using their smartphone.

Sutton Council has launched its mobile phone payment service which gives residents the chance to respond to SMS reminders instantly and keep on top of their bills.

Residents whose council tax payments are overdue, have been sent SMS reminders over the last six months but this is the first time that they have been able to use a payment tool specifically designed for mobiles.

Deputy leader of the council, councillor Colin Hall said: "As a 21st Century council we need to introduce 21st Century solutions. Web and mobile access are at the heart of our customer access strategy and we will continue to look for new and innovative ways to make use of this media.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for our residents to keep on top of their council tax bills and this method means saves time and money from printing and distribution, which in turn can be better spent elsewhere."

Plans are now being developed to personalise each text message with the customer's account number and amount owed to make easier to pay straight away.

The mobile phone payment service is a brand new addition to the mobile website and is available by going to www.mysutton.mobi.
