Police and council workers acting in tandem have seized two cars and carried out an arrest as part of a crackdown on motorists illegally using disabled parking badges.

The action, carried out last week by Merton Council and police, uncovered three cases of blue badge misuse, with parking tickets issued, as well as the vehicle seizure and arrest.

Councillor Mark Betteridge, cabinet member for performance and implementation said: "Blue Badges should only be used by those who are eligible.

"People who illegally display them in their vehicle should beware, because we will not tolerate abuse of the scheme.

"We always try to make parking in the borough as fair as possible, and that includes making provision for those people who find it difficult to get around and who therefore need to park as closely as possible to where they need to be."

The Blue Badge scheme gives people who are disabled or registered blind parking concessions.
