An MP’s ‘gay gaffe’ is included in a new book of embarrassing blunders by politicians and celebrities.

Epsom and Ewell MP Chris Grayling’s remarks about gay couples being turned away from B&Bs appear alongside Lady Gaga on stage in a wheelchair and Prince Philip saying ‘British women can’t cook’.

Back in 2010 MP Grayling was taped saying he personally took the view someone running a B&B in their own home should be able to decide who comes in, which provoked outrage among gay groups.

His remarks were among hundreds tracked down and compiled by retired GP Terry Mistry for his first book Foot in Mouth: Gaffes Old and New released today (December 13).

Mr Mistry, a grandfather who has lived in Epsom for 50 years, said he had read so many gaffes by politicians and celebrities he began collecting them.

He said: "During a party last Christmas I was relating some of the outrageous gaffes made by politicians and celebrities.

"Someone suggested that I should put that in a book. In the Spring I began putting pen to paper and it took on a life of its own.

"It’s exciting to finally to see it in print. ‘Job done before Christmas’ was great!"

Mr Mistry said he picked up gaffes from newspapers, TV and radio then sought permission to quote freely and credit the publisher.

He said: "More often than not I would send them the actual script I intended to publish.

"It always worked. The encouragement I had from editors and syndications was overwhelming."

Mr Mistry was born in South Africa and moved to England in the fifties where he qualified as a doctor and became house surgeon in the maternity unit at Epsom Hospital before moving into general practice.

He said: "I spend my retirement enjoying driving classic cars, combining my hobby with raising funds for charity."

When asked if he had made any gaffes himself, he replied: "Yes I have, but not any I want to admit to!"
