A sweeping case of flu has caused more than 100 children to stay off sick from a single primary school.

Wimbledon Chase Primary School in Merton Hall Road saw an unprecedented number of pupils struck down with a "flu-type" virus on Tuesday with 140 out of the school's 639 pupils off sick with a bug.

Sue Tomes, head teacher at the school, said: "There seems to be a nasty flu-type virus going around causing high temperatures, coughs and sore throats.

"This is the largest number of absences we have ever had during my time at the school.

"Hopefully, the children will all soon be better in time for Christmas."

The school's Christmas production will go ahead as planned.

A spokesperson for Merton Council said: “We would advise parents and carers, if at all possible, to keep their children at home if they develop flu-like symptoms and to seek advice from their doctor.”
