The number of Croydon primary schools meeting national performance targets has risen in the last 12 months, league tables published today showed.

Seventy-nine per cent of children scored Level 4 or above in English and Maths in exams this year, up from 74 per cent in 2011.

The increase keeps the borough in line with the national average.

But Croydon remains one of the poorest performing authorities in London, with only three boroughs reporting worse exam results.

Croydon's best performing primaries were St Cyprian's and David Livingstone, both in Thornton Heath and which both saw 100 per cent of pupils achieve Level 4.

The borough's most improved school was Oasis Academy Shirley Park, where the number of children making the grade doubled from 39 per cent to 78 per cent.

Castle Hill, where only 53 per cent of pupils scored Level 4 or higher, was the worst performing in Croydon.

The league tables are based on results in Sats exams, which pupils sit in their final year of primary school.
