Surrey’s director of public health is encouraging families to take simple steps to keep a cold at bay during the winter weather.
Dr Akeem Ali said cold weather can cause body temperatures to drop and the risk of developing a serious health condition to increase.
He said: "Older people, those with a heart or chest condition and elderly people who live alone are particularly at risk at this time of year.
"The best way to combat winter is to keep warm and follow a healthy lifestyle. By eating a healthy diet, exercising and keeping a warm home you will be taking simple steps to keep yourself and your family protected.
"Anyone who has been recommended to have a flu jab should contact their GP practice to make the necessary arrangements as soon as possible."
He also said families should keep warm at all times by wearing adequate clothing, even when it appears mild outside; and wash their hands regularly to avoid the spread of germs.
