A project to revive run-down flats started this month.

Elizabeth House Sheltered Housing Scheme, in Park Lane, Cheam, is to be demolished and rebuilt to provide up to 100 homes for elderly people and vulnerable young adults.

The developer, Viridian Housing, will design, build and manage the new homes, and will even deal with the demolition of the existing buildings. Sutton Council will have 100 per cent control of the rented properties throughout the 125 year lease.

The project will be completed in two phases so that the majority of residents will be able to remain on site as the new homes are built, the council says. Any residents who were displaced by the works will be given an opportunity to return once the homes are completed.
Cllr Jayne McCoy, chair of the Economy Housing and Business Committee said: "We are always looking at ways of improving our housing stock and one of the council's priorities is to create more quality homes within the borough and it's through schemes like this that we are able to achieve that goal."
Work on the first phase is expected to continue until early 2014. The second phase will be completed in 2015.
