Businesses have suffered "utterly horrific" damage after raw sewage gushed onto the streets.
A crew from Thames Water were working to prevent further damage after serious sewer flooding on London Road, West Croydon.
Sewage spewed onto the street and into nearby buildings near the junction with Hathaway Road at around 1.30pm.
A spokeswoman for Thames Water said: "We are dealing with a serious issue of sewer flooding in Croydon. We are still investigating exactly what has caused this and are working hard to try and prevent any further damage.
"Some properties in the area are suffering with internal sewer flooding which is utterly horrific and we are doing everything we can to help these people. We're really sorry for the mess this has caused."
