An Olympics volunteer who formed a choir of fellow Games Makers is hoping to snatch the coveted Christmas No 1 spot.

Victoria Verbi, 21, of Northcote Road, Battersea, and a group of 30 members of the 400-strong choir recorded the single with musician Alistair Griffin.

All proceeds from single I Wish for You the World will go to the British Olympic Foundation and British Paralympic Association to support aspiring sportspeople.

They have been performing at the South Bank Centre and were part of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards on Sunday.

They have since been signed to record label Decca, while the likes of Dame Tessa Jowell, Boris Johnson and Katherine Grainger have shown their support.

Miss Verbi, a student at the University of Manchester, first came up with the idea for the choir when she was volunteering over summer.

More than 200 people signed up to take part within days of her advertisement in the Games Makers newsletter.

She said: “My motivation is, let’s make as much money as we can and raise money to help them reach their Olympic dreams.”

The former Streatham and Clapham High School student had never conducted a choir before and was overwhelmed by the success of her group.

She said: “My friends and family think it is bonkers, I still can’t believe it’s happening. They absolutely love it – it’s all a bit surreal. My time as a Games Maker was one of the best things I have done and the choir is our way to help keep the legacy and spirit of London 2012 alive.”

Dame Jowell said: “So much is owed to the Games Makers for the success of London 2012. Their drive, commitment and energy remain so inspiring and, through this great single, they are helping to keep alive the Olympic spirit that swept across the
country.”
