A junction where two cars crashed yesterday has been branded a ‘death trap’.

The female drivers were only slightly hurt when the cars, a Mini Cooper and a BMW, collided at about 6.15pm outside the Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower in the Street, Ashtead.

Jason Smith, deputy manager at the pub, did not see the crash, but said the junction of the two busy roads was ‘god-awful’ and needed fixing.

Mr Smith said: "I drive here most days and actually avoid it because it’s a death trap. It’s just a nightmare."

He added that since September people had come in on two separate occasions to ask for CCTV footage after traffic accidents.

After the crash yesterday police and Epsom firefighters attended.

Fortunately injuries were minimal with one woman sustaining a slight cut on her hand.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: "It appears that a silver Mini Cooper pulled out in front of a grey BMW."

Christian Connolly, a member of bar staff at the pub, said he heard a bang when the cars collided and looked out of his upstairs bedroom window.

Mr Connolly said: "One car smashed into the side of the other car.

"The drivers argued a little bit and all the emergency crews turned up.

"Everyone in the pub was having a bit of a look out of the window but there were only a few onlookers."

Firefighter Mark Lepage, from Epsom fire station, said the front of one car and the side of the other car were damaged.

Mr Lepage said: "We got called to a road traffic collision but when we arrived we couldn’t tell who was at fault."
