Stepping Stones cat rescue in Wallington asks animal lovers to adopt a cat this new year

The new year could mean a whole new life for Sutton's unwanted cats.

A family-run cat rescue centre called Stepping Stones urgently needs people to adopt cats.

The Wallington based centre is run by mum-of-six Ros Carney, 50, who is currently inundated with felines.

Mrs Carney, who works as a senior teaching assistant at Holy Trinity School in Wallington, said: "It’s bad everywhere. It’s not just me. It’s just a continual stream of cats at the moment.

"It’s hard to say no to people so desperate they just don’t know what to do.

"It’s an ongoing and escalating problem. I’m turning down cats every day."

Most of Mrs Carney’s cats come from families for a variety of reasons including housing circumstances, allergies and financial constraints.

However, she does have one feral cat, Billie, who was found living wild in Wallington and a cat called Frosty who was found wandering around Sutton with frost bite on his ears.

She currently has around 30 cats in her home as well as kittens which are being looked after by fosterers.

Mrs Carney tries to help people as much as possible with their cats and Avenue Vets in Wallington neuter them for her.

The centre is run on donations and when Mrs Carney re-homes a cat she only asks for a donation for food and care.
