Thousands of businesses and homes in Wimbledon town centre were left without power this morning.

A total of 2,204 customers were cut off just after 6am this morning after an electrical fault on an underground cable caused a power cut to residents in The Broadway and Worple Road area.

Power was restored within 20 minutes to all but 245 premises that are still without power.

It is the second power cut to affect the area in less than a month after a similar interruption on December 16.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said: “UK Power Networks are working to restore power supplies to 245 customers in The Broadway and Worple Road area of Wimbledon.

"In two unrelated incidents that occurred between 6.16am and 10.18am, power was interrupted to a total of 2,204 customers.

"Supplies were restored to all but 245 customers within 20 minutes and work is continuing to reconnect the remaining power supplies as quickly as possible.

"We apologise to customers for the inconvenience this has caused and we are working to restore the last supplies as quickly as possible."
