Cheam councillor Mary Burstow is fighting the floods in Belmont

A councillor is fed up of a roundabout which continually floods.

Cheam councillor Mary Burstow is asking Surrey County Council to sort out the flooding around the Belmont roundabout at the junction of Belmont Rise and Brighton Road.

When it rains two pools of water quickly form and remain there for days and Mrs Burstow fears that both pools are potentially lethal.

She said: “Many local people tell me that this problem has been here for a long time.

“I certainly remember it being here ever since I moved to Cheam 14 years ago.

“In addition no Surrey constituents live close to the problem, so no one complains to the Banstead Ward Councillors.  It is Sutton residents who are affected.”

A spokesperson for Surrey County Council said the wetspot has a high prioritisation score of 64 and ranks 25th on their database of over 900 wetspots.

This particular area is scheduled for capital works to address the issue in the financial year 2015-2016

Certainly it has been there at least 14 years. During one heavy downpour my brother crashed there because he aquaplaned straight over the roundabout and over the other side. The water pools massively between the exits to the Sutton Bypass and the Brighton Road. During a heavy downpour people have to tiptoe round throwing up spray everywhere. I can't believe that Surrey CC have this as high priority otherwise they would have fixed it an age ago. The problem is that they would need to closed an important junction.

"A councillor is fed up of a roundabout which continually floods."

I am fed up with journalists writing "fed up of" when they should write "fed up with".

Before Councillor Burstow starts complaining to Surrey Council about roundabouts that flood, perhaps she should sort out a Sutton roundabout that regularly floods to a worse degree that the one at the end of the Mad Mile.

The double roundabout at Oaks Park, near the travellers site, has flooded for years and often covers half of the road.

That's my patch, I will ask out team to look into that right now. The roundabout is due for improvements soon with a new crossing on the cards.

There was another accident at the roundabout yesterday, a car was in the ditch, I think it must have aquaplaned. I only hope the occupants got out ok and that something is done about this hazard before lives are lost.
