Criminals will be watched wherever they go in one area after officers achieved what they think is a first for the Met - a neighbourhood watch volunteer in every street.

Every street in the Wandle Valley safer neighbourhoods team's area now has a volunteer, some even have two.

The latest volunteer was recruited by PCSO Sarah Lowe in Welbeck Road and brought the total for the area up to 120 volunteers covering 85 streets.

PCSO Lowe, who has done much of the recruiting herself, said she thinks the more people join, the safer the streets will be.

She added: "I hope it will make a significant difference and may make criminals think twice before they target our roads knowing that local residents will be keeping an eye out for any suspicious behaviour and reporting it immediately to police on 999."

Sutton now has 2,290 neighbourhood watch members compared to 1,419 last year.
