Holocaust memorial day event in Sutton

This month Sutton will remember the millions of people murdered during the holocaust.

The event will honour the memories of those who died during the Second World War and other genocides including those in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Sri Lanka and Darfur.

The mayor of Sutton, Councillor Sean Brennan, will join others from the local community at 10:30am on Sunday January 27 in Sutton’s Europa Gallery.

Councillor Adrian Davey, lead councillor for equalities, and the Reverend Meir Lev, the minister of Sutton and District Synagogue, will also speak at the event.

Coun Sean Brennan said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a very humbling experience for us all. We have a duty to learn about the atrocities to ensure that the lessons learnt are passed on from generation to generation.

“In Sutton we live in a multi-cultural society with people from many parts of the world who may have potentially fled from similar experiences in their home countries.

"Hopefully we’ll get a large turnout to mark the day as we honour the memories of those lost.”

Holocaust Memorial Day provides an opportunity for people to learn lessons from the Holocaust, Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides.

A presentation will also be made during the event to winners of Sutton’s Holocaust Memorial Day Schools’ Competition.
