A doctor has appeared in court to deny hitting a child he was treating across the face.

Dr Hossam Dabis, of Golf Side in Sutton, appeared at South East Surrey Magistrates’ Court on Friday, January 11, charged with one count of assault by beating.

The 62-year-old stands accused of committing the assault on the child at Epsom Hospital in August last year.

He has pleaded not guilty and will stand trial at the court in June.

Prosecutor Tariq Mohammed told the court: "The victim attended Epsom Hospital for a routine appointment.

"The incident was with regards to a pen. The defendant asked the child to pick the pen up. Prior to doing it, he is alleged to have assaulted the child by striking her face with his hand.

"He denies the assault taking place."

Dr Dabis is listed as a locum doctor specialising in paediatric orthopaedics and lower limb on Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust's website.

When he appeared in court the white haired doctor wore glasses and a suit, waistcoat and tie.

He is on unconditional bail.

A spokesman for the trust said: "We can confirm that a member of our staff has appeared in court, following an allegation of common assault.

"This member of staff was excluded from work following the alleged incident.

"We cannot comment further at this current time."
