12:10pm Thursday 17th January 2013 in News By Sophia Sleigh, Reporter
This is the first glimpse inside the new multi-million pound Westcroft Leisure Centre.
When plans were first mooted the centre was due to open in Autumn 2012 however the re-vamped centre will finally throw open its doors to the public on January 26 at an event packed full of sporting heroes.
Visitors to the new centre will be welcomed by the orange front with big glass windows and a reception with doors opening on to a modern library.
The new 25m main swimming pool has a seated balcony which will allow the centre to hold county and regional galas as well as a 20m pool for teaching and training.
The spacious eight court sports hall is almost finished and is waiting for its final lick of green paint.
There will also be a gym offering over 160 stations of fitness equipment - including ones for wheelchair users, and a spa.
Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of the environment and neighbourhoods committee called it a 21st century facility.
James Bowden, the centre’s general manager, said the old centre saw about 600,000 people in a year, but with the new centre they are hoping to see up to one million people in a year.
Clubs were moved to other gyms and locations in the borough while the centre underwent its refurbishment and centre has promised to protect their rates if they wish to return.
The adult full fitness membership has gone down from its previous rate of £42.25 to £35 and this has been promised as a price for life.
The open day on January 26 will host a wide range of activities.
Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of the environment and neighbourhoods committee called it a 21st century facility.
Olympic gymnast, Max Whitlock, will perform a floor display and there will be Team GB swimmers and Strictly Come Dancing star Kristina Rihanoff.
All activities will be free with an Everyone Active card which you can get online at everyoneactive.com/westcroft or by visiting the Activity Suite at 14 Beacon Grove in Carshalton.
