Hopes the Tour de France could come to Surrey were dashed last week when details of the route were announced.
The 2014 race starts in Yorkshire and goes down South to London via Cambridge, but does not go through Surrey.
In the summer Surrey County Council said it was planning a bid to host a stage of the Tour de France.
At the time council leader David Hodge said: "We’re looking at putting together a bid to host a stage of the Tour de France to build on the success of the Olympic cycle races."
But following the announcement a Surrey County Council spokesman refused to give any details of the bid or why it might have failed.
He said: "We did talk to British Cycling last year about the possibility but have nothing new to report."
However, disappointed cycling fans can still look forward to the Tour of Britain, which is coming through Surrey in September.
