Residents will remember the victims of the Holocaust and more recent genocides at a candle-lighting ceremony.

The event will mark Holocaust Memorial Day, an international event marking the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27 in 1945.

It will remember those murdered in the Holocaust and in subsequent genocides including in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur.

Croydon’s theme for 2013 is “Communities Together: Build a Bridge”.

There will be a dedicated Holocaust Memorial Day exhibition in the borough’s libraries.

Councillor Vidhi Mohan, cabinet member for communities and economic development, said: “We must never forget those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and continue to fight prejudice, discrimination and hatred.

“In Croydon we have one of the most diverse populations in the country, with our communities coming from many different backgrounds, faiths and cultures.

“Together as one we will celebrate our diversity, while remembering the victims of genocide around the world.”

The event will take place at 11.30am on Monday, 28 January in the foyer of Croydon Town Hall.
