Croydon South MP Richard Ottaway has signed a book in the House of Commons to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Mr Ottaway pledged his support to the Holocaust Memorial Day 2013 early day motion and committed to observe the 68th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp on January 27.

He said: "I am honoured to sign the Book of Commitment and observe Holocaust Memorial Day this year, as I do every year. It is a stark reminder to all of us and to future generations of the sickening events that took place during the Second World War.

“In Auschwitz-Birkenau alone an estimated 1.1 million people were murdered. Six million Jews were victims of the Holocaust. These are crimes that can never be forgotten.”

Karen Polloc, chief executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: "We are proud that Richard is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day this year.

"It is vitally important that we both remember and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust – as well as ensuring that we continue to challenge all forms of hatred and bigotry."
