Thieves ram-raided a Co-op overnight with a stolen Ford Escort.

The saloon car was driven through the front shutters of the Co-op, Banstead Road, Carshalton on January 22 at 1am.

The suspects, believed to be three in number, made off with a large quantity of cigarettes. They were all wearing hooded tops and were heard to shout “Hurry up”.

Two of them escaped on foot into nearby Waverley Way while the third suspect drove the Escort car out of the shop to Waverley Way.

All three suspects got into a black Vauxhall Corsa and drove away.

Tim Crowley, deputy leader of the opposition, said: "It's ridiculous. This is disgraceful. The Co-op's only shut for a few hours a night. People use this shop on a regular basis - it's a real shame."
