Olympic athletes and Strictly Come Dancing stars were the order of the day at the official opening of the Westcroft Leisure Centre.

Team GB swimmers and gymnast Max Whitlock gave demonstrations at the Carshalton based centre on Saturday, January 26.

Around 5,000 people attended the event which also featured face painting, arts and crafts and a dance workshop with Strictly star Kristina Rihanoff.

Tom Brake the MP for Carshalton and Wallington said: “This was an exciting and fun day. I am happy we now have such top-notch facilities to enjoy.

“I hope that many families and individuals will use the centre to stay fit and healthy and have fun. I will certainly be dropping in for a swim or workout soon.”

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chair of Sutton’s environment and neighbourhoods committee, said: “The day was fantastic and I was so pleased to see so many people turn up to see what we have been developing.

"The stars really made the day complete and I’m sure that everyone who came really enjoy meeting them and taking part in the various activities.

“We now want to see those same faces - and many more - coming back week in, week out to use the centre and take advantage of the wonderful equipment and facilities we have here in Sutton.”
