Children in care will be rewarded for their achievements by the Mayor of Sutton.

The borough's first citizen, councillor Sean Brennan, will present youngsters with awards next month after they were recognised by care workers for achieving something in their personal, academic or professional lives.

Josh McNally , 21, spent 12 years in care before being discharged from the Leaving Care Team at the beginning of the month.

During his time he succeeded in overcoming a number of hurdles and challenges in his personal and family life.

Now a parent, Josh has managed to maintain a home by himself and values and accepts the responsibility.

Josh said: "Whilst growing up there have been a number of temptations to go down the wrong road; particularly as I have been in care for most of my life and on my own.

"However, with support from some of the people who were around me I have chosen to turn my situation around."

Coun Sean Brennan, said: "Each and every one of these young people has done something remarkable against the odds. Their achievements are things that we may take for granted but to get to where they are today they have had to overcome some enormous obstacles in their way."

The evenings will take place at the Holiday Inn in Sutton on Monday 18 February between 12pm and 3pm and Tuesday 26 February between 6pm and 9pm.
