Southern train cancelled after mystery 'person urinates on driver's seat'

A train was cancelled last night because someone urinated on the driver's seat, passengers were told.

Hundreds of commuters were left waiting on the platform after the mysterious discovery of a pool of liquid behind the locked door of the train's driver cab.

The driver is said to have announced to passengers that someone had urinated on his chair.

The 21.52 service had been scheduled to travel from London Victoria to London Bridge.

Passengers were due to start their journeys to  Battersea Park, Clapham Junction, Wandsworth Common, Balham, Streatham Hill, West Norwood, Gipsy Hill, and Crystal Palace.

Stephen Hull, who was waiting for the train, tweeted: "My delayed train home cancelled cos somebody p****d in driver's seat.

"They took the entire train away cos the driver complained. Hundreds of people stuck at Victoria."

Mr Hull said he had seen a puddle of urine in the driver's cab.

Southern said they were investigating the incident but could not confirm that the suspect liquid was urine.

They said no member of the public could usually access the driver's cab and this was part of their investigation.

A spokesman for the train company said: "The 21.52 Victoria to London Bridge service was cancelled last night following reports from the driver that the driver’s seat was wet and unuseable.

"Passengers who were due to travel on the 21.52 service were able to complete their journey on the 22.22 service, and we apologise to them for the inconvenience this caused."

Must have been the wrong kind of urine.

In this era of security incidents surely we should be asking how this weak bladdered, or just blathered, person managed to gain entry to the drivers cab. This should not have been possible. Had his motives been of a more dubious nature anything could have been left there or the controls damaged.

There are public toilets at Victoria - and in all the pubs too there is no excuse for such disgusting behaviour at all I feel sorry for both the driver and all the people delayed by this person's actions

"They took the entire train away cos the driver complained." How did they take the train away when the driver's seat was unusable?

@ Michael - if the driver can't sit and drive the train, then it's unusable! I think anyone - regardless of job - would rightly complain if they turned up to work to find their seat covered in urine.

Of course andy but you didn't answer my question just went off on another tack implying I said something I didn't.

Most likely by leaving it in the platform whilst it is cleaned (at 10pm it's not as if there is a shortage of platforms) or perhaps another unit was attached to the front it it to take it to the depot.

Thanks Andy for the interesting information. These operational details are a source of great pleasure and fascination to me as an incurable lifelong railway and bus anorak.
As you sound an expert, maybe in the business, please post if you hear of any engineering diversions coming up that would allow me a ride in the daylight on an in service passenger train ex Waterloo diverted from Clapham Junction to Wimbledon via East Putney up the single track ramp and via the District Line. I got a ride in the middle of the night but could not see anything out of the window apart from the lit up stations on the District.
