Brighton Road car park in Sutton could become new offices
Brighton Road car park could be sold to engineering company Subsea 7.
Subsea 7, a seabed-to-surface engineering, construction and services contractor to the offshore energy industry worldwide, today announced it plans to build a new office block on the site.
The plans will create hundreds of new jobs.
Subsea 7 currently has around three hundred people based at Quadrant House.
Architects are currently drawing up design concepts for the new building and the company hopes to unveil draft proposals in March, before submitting a planning application to the local authority in April.
Subsea 7 Vice President, Dave Williams said: "We are pleased to be able to announce this proposal for a long-term investment in our presence in Sutton and look forward to sharing our draft proposals with the local community over the next couple of months.
"We are committed to consulting with the local community before we lodge a planning application and want to ensure that we deliver a landmark building that Sutton can be proud to have at this southern gateway location."
Only last month Sutton South Area Committee voted in favour of allocating funds to turn the area in front of the car park into a playground.
Jayne McCoy, Chair of the Economy and Business Committee said: "This proposal represents a huge vote of confidence in Sutton's future and could bring hundreds of new, hi-tech, engineering jobs to the area. Plus a real boost to local shops and restaurants.
"We have substantially more car parking capacity than people use in Sutton town centre, with our three multi-storey car parks, so developing Brighton Road could make sense. What's important to me is that we get a development local people are happy with and that we create more jobs."
