Wandsworth girls are set to join the borough’s boys team at the home of cricket after winning through to the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Indoor Cricket Finals.

The girls showed they have what it takes to succeed with three wins out of three in their group at Harrow Leisure Centre on Saturday, and now they have a trip to Lord’s on March 3 to look forward to.

The team comprised Lottie McDonald, Eliza Swinburn, Jo-Jo Foster, Catherine Walker, Lizzie Perry, Madeline Blinkhorn-Jones and Olivia Fanning.

Team manager Kiyo Jason was delighted with his team’s performance. He said: “They bowled, batted and fielded well. They had a lot of fun and I was very proud of them.”

Team mManager Kiyo Jason said: “It’s fantastic to have both teams through to the finals. You never know what can happen on the day - we did train for it but with these qualifiers it is a bit of a lottery and we had a very tough group.

"The girls were fantastic and exceeded my expectations by a long way. They bowled, batted and fielded well; they played as a unit and kept it simple. They had a lot of fun and I was very proud of them."

Wandsworth were quick to lay down a marker in their opening match against Tower Hamlets, securing an easy 27-26 victory, thanks to impressive play both on the field and at the wicket.

Jason said: “In the first game we got the runs in nine balls. We have two young girls - Maddie Blinkhorn-Jones and Olivia Fanning - who opened the batting and were top scorers in every game we played.

"They are just 10 years old and they polished the game off brilliantly. Lottie McDonald was just dynamite and a star fielder on the day, with some great catching and run outs. Everyone else played superbly too.”

A win against Redbridge was followed up by a convincing victory over Sutton, who only managed 37 runs to Wandsworth’s impressive 158 – the top score of the weekend.

Jason said: “Redbridge was a game that we knew was important as they always have a strong team, so we thought that would be tough but the girls did fantastically well.”

Now with the Finals at Lords just three weeks away, Jason believes his teams have the ability to shine.

“We’ll keep everything the same in our preparation. We’ve kept it simple but efficient. That’s what’s got both teams through so far," he said.

"The girls haven’t reached the finals for the last couple of years, but I don’t think they will be overwhelmed; they will enjoy the big occasion.

“The qualifiers have broken a big fear factor, a lot of the girls were weary of being smaller, but once they played against the other bigger girls they realised size doesn’t matter.

"As long as you have the skills, the heart and the character you can overcome any obstacle. The girls realised that in abundance.”

The Balfour Beatty London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event. A record 104,463 young Londoners took part in the record-breaking 2012 London Youth Games.
